Santander
Santander is one of the top high street banks with 14 million active customers in the UK.
Value Delivered
- Employee engagement
- Scalability
- Fiscal value
- Data security
To improve environmental awareness and data security, and to ‘close the loop’ on the electronics manufacturing cycle, Santander partnered with Computacenter to conduct a two-day electronics recycling event at their UK headquarters.
Known as ‘Recycle for Good’, these days offer the opportunity for Santander’s people, customers, and the general public to securely dispose of unwanted electronic devices. Utilising Computacenter’s Circular Services, the event was held onsite at one of Santander’s key strategic locations, overseen by Circular Services specialists.
A positive collaboration
Where a device has a lifespan beyond its original purpose, Computacenter can recover, then redeploy, remarket, or where there is no longer any usable value, responsibly recycle. In the case of Recycle for Good, a fiscal value is generated from the assessment of any devices that are fit for remarketing, which can be distributed to the Santander Foundation, utilising redundant technology to make a meaningful impact in the community.
Every time a device enters the Circular Services stream, it is tracked at each stage of its journey. With each asset wholly accounted for, Santander also receives a report on all items processed by Circular Services, highlighting carbon and water avoidance from reusing or recycling the event’s devices.
Making an impact
With almost 200 phones, 50 tablets, 75 laptops, and 10 desktops – plus hundreds of smaller items including cables, webcams, headphones and mice received, Computacenter transported these to its Circular Services Center for processing, valuation, then either remarketing or recycling.
With up to 880 million redundant tech items in the UK, the Recycle for Good scheme encourages our customers, and their employees, to seek out technology items that may have another life around their homes and use them to help fight the global e-waste challenge whilst giving back to the community.
Why Computacenter?
- Computacenter’s Circular Services enable organisations to gain full visibility of the environmental impact of technology, empowering good decision making and best environmental practice.
- Expert teams provided by Circular Services are able to attend on-site technology amnesty days for organisations wanting to promote environmental responsibility and data security.
- Operating from the largest facility of its kind in Europe, Computacenter's UK Circular Services team can handle any level of data security via its Government-approved facility and on-site destruction.
- Computacenter is a Blancco Platinum partner, providing secure data sanitisation and eliminating risk from data leakage for our customers.
Recycle for Good gave us, our colleagues in Unity Place, and the local Milton Keynes community the opportunity to reduce our impact on the environment. It was fantastic to see so many people engaged, making use of the drop-off, and being able to clear out their old equipment safely. We are working passionately in Santander Procurement to reduce our environmental footprint, and I am very proud of our progress.
Value Delivered
- Employee engagement: Raising awareness of the global e-waste challenge motivated people to take action. The initiative is aligned with Santander’s sustainability agenda and ambition to reduce its environmental impact.
- Economy of scale: Powered by a partner that can handle large volumes, ‘Recycle for Good’ days provide access for the 4,500 workers at Unity Place and its communities, an opportunity to raise environmental awareness and exercise environmental responsibility.
- Fiscal value: All items that may have another life are remarketed, with monies returned to the Santander Foundation.
- Data security: With privacy being a leading concern for disposing of old technology, Computacenter securely sanitised every item processed. This provided Santander and its employees with confidence that their data was handled to the highest industry standards.
