Gloucestershire Constabulary cuts datacenter refresh costs by up to 75 per cent with virtualisation

Gloucestershire Constabulary cuts datacenter refresh costs by up to 75 per cent with virtualisation

Gloucestershire Constabulary’s officers need rapid and continuous access to police systems and data to identify suspects, respond to 999 calls and return lost and stolen items to their owners. When the force’s server estate needed refreshing, it was keen to reduce hardware costs without compromising availability.

The force partnered with Computacenter to deploy a virtualised datacenter environment based on Cisco UCS and VMware technologies. The new platform supports critical applications and has enabled up to a 25:1 server consolidation ratio.

Gloucestershire Constabulary saved up to 75 per cent on the hardware and warranty costs associated with its datacenter refresh. The new environment improves system availability, simplifies IT management and provides the private cloud foundations needed to facilitate the delivery of shared services

Severn Trent Water safeguards staff productivity and reduces IT costs with standardised laptop infrastructureSevern Trent Water safeguards staff productivity and reduces IT costs with standardised laptop infrastructure

Severn Trent Water's ability to provide high-quality water services depends upon the availability of its IT systems. Over 1,000 members of staff rely on laptop computers to carry out their daily activities. Severn Trent Water's ageing laptop estate, however, frequently caused downtime and was expensive to support. As a result, Severn Trent Water needed to migrate staff to new devices – with minimal disruption and in a short timeframe.

To ensure the success of the project, Severn Trent Water enlisted the help of long-term IT partner Computacenter. Computacenter ran an e-tender to find the most cost-effective laptops available to Severn Trent Water and managed the transition to the HP devices using its Desktop Technology Optimisation (DTO) approach. 900 laptops were replaced over a six-week period, with a success rate of 99.7 per cent, underpinned by excellent user feedback. The legacy devices were then remarketed and recycled by Computacenter's specialist IT asset disposal arm RDC.

The new standardised laptop estate will enable Severn Trent Water to reduce its support costs and decrease the number of laptop outages. This will help to improve staff productivity and therefore customer service levels.
