Computacenter helps roll out new desktop infrastructure at ChevronTexaco Upstream Europe

2/10/2002

ChevronTexaco Upstream Europe is to deploy a Microsoft Windows XP desktop environment as part of a major global upgrade of its IT infrastructure.

The project, which is being implemented in conjunction with Computacenter, will include rolling out more than 500 HP desktops and IBM laptops running Windows XP and Office XP.

Jim Boyle, Programme Manager at ChevronTexaco Upstream Europe, commented: “The roll-out is part of a company-wide refresh that will enable ChevronTexaco to further standardise its IT infrastructure across more than 180 countries. Standardisation helps simplify the development and deployment of applications, and reduces the complexities of managing technology in a global enterprise.”

ChevronTexaco Upstream Europe is a strategic business unit of ChevronTexaco Overseas Petroleum, and produces around 250,000 barrels of oil a day from sites in the UK, Denmark and Norway.

The desktop roll-out includes the company’s offices in Aberdeen and offshore locations. Staff from Computacenter’s Scotland division will be jointly implementing the new architecture with an internal project team from ChevronTexaco Upstream Europe. “Computacenter helped to roll out our existing Windows 98 environment three years ago, so it has a good track record of working with the company,” added Boyle. “Computacenter also has proven expertise in implementing Windows XP environments, and with deploying complex IT infrastructure projects in the energy sector. By upgrading to Windows and Office XP, we expect to benefit considerably from the increased ability to remotely support users.”

The roll-out of the new technology started at the end of September, with the project due to be completed by the end of the year.

Andy Purvis, Sector Director for Computacenter in Scotland, added: “An increasing number of companies are taking steps to consolidate their IT infrastructures on to standard operating systems, hardware and applications. Not only does standardisation give businesses greater control over their IT systems, it can also help reduce the costs associated with managing and supporting IT infrastructures.

“Computacenter has an extensive team of technical consultants and project managers with specific expertise of the energy sector, and we are delighted to once again be working with ChevronTexaco.”
