Nationwide is the world’s largest building society, and employs more than 16,000 staff in over 850 retail outlets and administration centres. It offers a broad range of financial services, which are used by approximately 11 million customers. It has also deployed more than 2,000 ATMs as well as providing its services across a range of channels, including PDAs and interactive television.
To deliver these services and complete day-to-day administration tasks, the company’s staff rely on a range of vendor applications, all of which need to be licensed for use.
In addition, with the financial services industry becoming more and more competitive, it is essential that Nationwide drives efficiency and best value from every area of its IT operations.
As Arthur Amos, head of IT Planning and Governance for Nationwide, explains: “We need to be able to deliver more for less and to ensure that the services we provide to customers are both highly available and of a consistent quality.”
To help maximise the value of its software licences, the building society fulfils the majority of its licence requirements through Computacenter, which also provides Nationwide with a wide range of complimentary infrastructure services.
As part of its single software supplier agreement with Nationwide, which was initiated in 2005, Computacenter has helped the building society re-negotiate several of its major software maintenance renewals. In total, Computacenter manages procurement from more than 70 software vendors, including Microsoft. It also provides Nationwide with ongoing licensing support and vendor management, which helps to simplify the supply chain and reduce internal administration.
Thanks to this partnership approach, Nationwide has been able to make significant financial savings. “By working together we have managed to simplify software procurement, which will help to reduce costs and enhance efficiency,” comments Amos. “Computacenter is a key partner for us. It understands our business and culture, and delivers a professional, competitive and flexible service.”
Computacenter has been advising Nationwide on software licensing for more than nine years.
